The US and the EU plan to coordinate the development of smart grid standards, if financial frugality can be overcome, according to a new report by business intelligence expert GBI Research.
The new report* states that the US plans to implement smart grid technology to reduce the national energy demand by 20%, improve system efficiency by 40% and incorporate 20% renewable sources into the total electricity capacity by 2030. However, these impressive aims may not be met if plans fail as a result of the global recession.

Defining Smart Grids and Smart Opportunities

Print PDF

In the generation, transmission and distribution (GT&D) of electricity, ‘Smart Grid’ has been used to describe the growing intelligence in the electric grid. Historically, smart grid first referred to the increasing use of a communications network to reduce an electricity provider’s dependence on labor to read billing meters; the smart meter required a smart grid to manage the intelligent communications. Some industry players and media still adhere to this increasingly limited definition.

400 Million ‘Smart Home Energy Management’ Devices to Present Major Opportunities for Connectivity Semiconductor Suppliers

Print PDF

In the next five years, around 400 million ‘smart home energy management’ devices will be shipped globally, according to a recent study from IMS Research, a leading analyst firm recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS). This includes devices such as smart meters, smart thermostats, in-home displays, ‘smart appliances’, and load control switches [see figure below]. This represents a major opportunity for IC suppliers, driving connectivity technologies into a wide range of typically ‘un-connected’ devices. Yet the type of connectivity technologies selected varies by both country and the type of company deploying the energy management solution.
