The new version incorporates advanced battery health estimation, adaptive battery modeling, and long-term fleet analysis capabilities, extending advanced battery management to a wide range of energy-constrained IoT products.

Nordic Fuel Gauge v2.0 will enable manufacturers to create more reliable, sustainable, and durable products, while also complying with new regulations on battery replacement. These include the European Union Batteries Regulation 2023/1542, which requires that portable batteries be “easily removable and replaceable by the user at any time during the product's lifespan.”.

The update allows manufacturers to determine when a battery needs replacing, support right-to-repair initiatives, improve product reliability, and reduce warranty costs.

Fleet-scale battery intelligence with nRF Cloud
Fuel Gauge v2.0 integrates natively with Nordic's lifecycle cloud services, nRF Cloud, powered by Memfault.
Devices can automatically report:
State-of-Health,
State-of-Charge, and
battery performance metrics—
all without the need to develop custom cloud infrastructure.
This enables engineering and operations teams to:
monitor battery health across an entire fleet of devices,
identify anomalies
, optimize charging parameters,
and improve future hardware designs based on real-world field data.

New Approach to Monitoring Battery Lifespan Building
on the State-of-Charge accuracy introduced in Fuel Gauge v1.0, version 2.0 adds an adaptive model that continuously compares the battery's original profile with its actual behavior over time.
This enables:
accurate State-of-Health (SoH) estimates,
charge cycle tracking,
long-term degradation analysis,
and stable accuracy throughout the product's lifespan, even as the battery ages.

For devices where users swap multiple batteries, Nordic's algorithm can manage multiple packs and keep track of the health status of each.
Traditional battery meters rely on fixed models or coulomb counts, which can deviate over time. Nordic's approach doesn't require a dedicated battery measurement IC, as it utilizes the nPM1300's built-in voltage, temperature, and current measurements, along with a smart algorithm running on the host.

This approach offers:
accuracy comparable to dedicated IC solutions,
lower system cost,
less bill of materials (BOM) complexity, and
zero power consumption during sleep mode, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to competing solutions.
Fuel Gauge v2.0 can run on any wireless host MCU or SoC, including the nRF54 Series and nRF91 Series families, as well as third-party platforms. This allows OEMs to incorporate advanced battery intelligence into virtually any connected device.

Availability
Nordic Fuel Gauge v2.0 is currently in beta for customers, with wider availability planned for June 2026.
