The initial project will focus on improving the diagnosis of a chronic disease that diffusely affects both lungs and is characterized by progressive scarring, which causes the lungs to lose flexibility and deteriorate function over time.
Patients with this disease have a high mortality rate, and current treatments only delay, but do not reverse, the pathology. Therefore, the use of artificial intelligence and new diagnostic techniques allows for the detection of early changes in lung tissue before the disease progresses, enabling treatment to be applied as soon as possible and improving patients' quality of life.
The development of the artificial intelligence algorithms will be carried out through a collaborative innovation and co-creation process involving medical teams, data scientists, and artificial intelligence engineers, with expert knowledge gathered through tools developed by Enzyme.

The
project will utilize two SaaS platforms developed within the Enzyme Technologies framework. On one hand, the Smart Vision Platform (a platform for the development, management, and use of computer vision solutions) will automate manual classification processes based on visual inspection, while also enabling the discovery of patterns previously undetected by specialists.
On the other hand, KomOmbo, Enzyme's platform that functions as a marketplace for data and knowledge sharing, adds a Federated Learning layer, ensuring privacy and allowing the exploitation of the true value of the data. It will be used to create the collaborative training infrastructure for future extensions of this project.
Through expert analysis of images and information from the HCB case bank, and the use of Enzyme's integrated Computer Vision and KomOmbo solutions, support will be provided to medical teams, improving response times in the diagnostic process.

Antonio Martínez, Head of the Pathology Department at the Biomedical Diagnostic Center of the Hospital Clínic, states, “The Enzyme Advising Group's proposal struck us as innovative and perfectly aligned with the objectives of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. This project is highly replicable for other pathologies and could represent a turning point in the diagnosis of diseases, both common and rare. In this way, the Clínic is taking another step forward as a leader in the field of Computational Pathology through revolutionary technology and a trusted partner.”

In this project, ensuring patient data security is a strategic priority, and therefore, it is guaranteed in two ways. First, the algorithm is developed using anonymized surplus patient data from HCB. Second, each component of the solution is designed to ensure the confidentiality of data processing.
Álvaro Ortín, CEO of Enzyme Advising Group, explains, “At Enzyme, we have always been committed to AI, which we can now apply to the healthcare sector. For this reason, the agreement reached is an important step, and we are delighted to collaborate with HCB on this innovative initiative and contribute our AI expertise to accelerate the diagnosis of these and other diseases, thus improving patients' quality of life.”
