The included algorithms provide clinical-grade information on heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory rate (RR), SpO2, body temperature, sleep quality, and stress levels. This allows wearable designers to begin collecting data immediately, saving at least six months in the manufacturing process.
Designed for wrist-worn form factors, the HSP 3.0 can be adapted to other dry electrode form factors such as chest patches and smart rings. Compared to its predecessor, the Health Sensors Platform 2.0 (HSP 2.0), the HSP 3.0 incorporates optical SpO2 measurement and dry electrode capabilities into ECG. As a result, it can enable end-user solutions for monitoring cardiac and respiratory issues for the treatment of conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19), sleep apnea, and atrial fibrillation (AFib). Compared to its predecessor, the HSP 3.0's narrower form factor and improved optical architecture enhance signal acquisition quality and utilizes an improved microcontroller, power, safety, and IC detection system. The reference design includes complete optical and sports electrode designs, along with algorithms to meet clinical requirements. Maxim Integrated is at the forefront of the wearable healthcare and remote patient monitoring revolution, enabling personalized healthcare as well as improved predictive and preventative healthcare solutions. Medical professionals and end users are leveraging the wealth of health insights these wearables offer. They can more proactively manage chronic conditions, diagnose acute illnesses such as COVID-19, and enhance preventative care and overall well-being. As more detection modalities are integrated into wearables, device developers can capitalize on multiple measurements to improve the accuracy of the actionable insights provided to users.
HSP 3.0 or MAXREFDES104# includes the following sensor, power management, microcontroller, and algorithm products:
MAX86176: The lowest-noise optical photoplethysmography (PPG) and analog electrical ECG (AFE) front-end, offering a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 110dB, plus SpO2 saturation capability and a common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of over 110dB for dry-electrode ECG applications. The device enables synchronous acquisition of PPG and ECG measurements, even with independent sampling rates, providing pulse transit time for cardiac health use cases.
MAX20360: A highly integrated power and battery management IC optimized for advanced in-body health sensing devices. It includes Maxim Integrated's high-precision ModelGauge™ m5 EZ fuel gauge, a sophisticated haptic controller, and a unique low-noise power boost converter that maximizes SNR and minimizes energy used for optical biosensing.
MAX32666: Ultra-low power microcontroller with Bluetooth (BLE) featuring two Arm® Cortex®-M4F cores and an additional SmartDMA chip that allows the BLE stack to operate independently, freeing up the two main cores for critical tasks. Furthermore, the microcontroller integrates a comprehensive suite of security and error-correcting code (ECC) into its memory to significantly enhance system robustness.
MAX32670: An ultra-low-power microcontroller dedicated to Maxim Integrated's world-class PPG algorithms for pulse rate, SpO2, HRV, RR, sleep quality monitoring, and stress monitoring. It can be configured as a sensor hub to support firmware and algorithms or as an algorithm hub to support multiple algorithms.
The MAX32670 seamlessly enables the customer's desired sensor functionality, including handling the MAX86176 PPG and ECG sensor AFE, as well as delivering raw or calculated data to the outside world.
MAX30208: This low-power, high-precision digital temperature sensor comes in a small 2mm x 2mm package. It draws 33 percent less operating current than the most competitive solution. It reads the temperature on the top of the package and can be mounted on a flexible cable or PCB, simplifying wearable design. With an accuracy of 0.1 degrees Celsius, the MAX30208 meets clinical temperature requirements.
Key advantages:
Faster time to market: Saves at least six months in development time.
Clinical grade: Accuracy meets regulatory requirements for SpO2 and ambulatory ECG (IEC 60601-2-47).
Covers key vital signs: Addresses the needs of advanced medical garments with SpO2, ECG, HR, HRV, RR, body temperature, and movement.
Complete reference design: Enables designers to innovate with full access to source code and design files.
“Remote monitoring of patients’ vital signs is more important than ever,” says Dr. Nadia Tsao, principal analyst at IDTechEx. “The pandemic has rapidly accelerated the adoption of digital health services such as telehealth and remote patient monitoring—by as much as 1,000 percent in some cases. Going forward, remote patient monitoring will be critical for preventative healthcare and the management of chronic diseases. We are already seeing billions of dollars in deals, IPOs, and investments, even during the height of the pandemic.”.
“During these times of the pandemic, there is a push toward point-of-use monitoring of clinical-grade measurements such as SpO2, respiration, and temperature,” says Andrew Baker, Director of the Industry and Healthcare Business Unit at Maxim Integrated. “Developers are striving to continue this momentum of remote patient monitoring by creating innovative solutions to provide deeper insights into health conditions, open doors to improved well-being, and minimize the amount of time people need to visit healthcare facilities.”.
