The OE-A has concluded a survey, stating that "The results of our business climate survey show that the printed electronics sector remains on track, despite challenging conditions. We see a mixed but generally stable and positive outlook. Companies are proceeding cautiously, investing specifically in research and development, and retaining their employees. Despite the turbulent situation caused by the trade wars and US tariff policy, the industry is looking ahead," said Dr. Klaus Hecker, Director General of the OE-A.
The semi-annual survey is conducted by the OE-A, an international working group within the VDMA. The survey reveals several trends: while just under 60% of companies anticipate industry growth this year, this figure was higher, at 77%, in the previous survey conducted in the spring. The industry expects sales growth of 7% by 2025, a slight decrease compared to the previous survey in February 2025 (9%). Order intake expectations are also lower than in the spring survey.
"The results of the current survey highlight the pressure to adjust; investments in production are only being increased very cautiously, and 54% of companies say they are reducing their production investments.
The consequences of the geopolitical situation and the crisis in the automotive sector are also reflected in the results," explains Hecker.
Sales Growth of 14% by 2026.
By 2026, the industry has more positive expectations, with a sales forecast of +14%, which has even increased compared to the beginning of the year. Other encouraging signs include improved employment prospects. 30% of companies plan to increase their workforce in the coming months, compared to 10% in February. The remaining 70% expect the number of employees to remain stable. Research and development is also evolving positively: 74% of the companies surveyed want to further expand their R&D activities, a significant increase compared to the last survey.
The sector remains cautious, but a slight recovery is evident compared to February.
Despite navigating a challenging market environment, there are signs that 2026 will bring a more positive outlook. The shift in trend is particularly apparent in employment and research. “This clear commitment to innovation underscores our industry’s determination to strengthen its competitiveness and adapt to changing market conditions,” says Klaus Hecker. “By specifically investing in research and development, companies are setting the course for further product innovation and long-term growth. This innovative strength will be impressively showcased at productronica next month and at LOPEC 2026.”
