Today, the rising financial and environmental costs associated with energy use have accelerated the search for solutions to improve energy efficiency. In data centers, energy efficiency improvements, specifically PUE reductions, can be achieved at various levels of the system. Among the operational decisions that can be implemented is the operating mode known as Eco-Mode. This mode focuses on reducing energy protection to achieve improved energy efficiency and energy savings.

Individually, the cost of power supply components is high compared to buying an off-the-shelf power supply. For example, a commercially available 30A 5V power supply costs approximately five times less than the cost of manufacturing the same power supply, and pre-assembled power supplies often come with a five-year warranty. Therefore, it generally makes sense to design only what cannot be purchased.

“Smaller, faster, prettier” – these are the main criteria for today’s electronics. A profitable guideline for manufacturers, but also quite challenging for design engineers, who must fit everything into a much smaller space. Put safety above these requirements and the situation becomes even more complex.

Standardization on a single platform for microcontrollers tops the industry's wish list, but even with a common core, designers will have to deal with peripheral and firmware portability issues.

Automated Test Equipment (ATE) has historically been built with a centralized power supply architecture. The enclosures offered a limited number of standardized supply voltages, which were then connected to each test board. This configuration was effective and practical because the circuitry on the instrument boards did not require high power levels: for the most part, the voltages were linearly regulated from the nearest supply voltage, which was connected to each board from the power supply in each enclosure. Furthermore, early DC/DC converters were expensive, bulky, noisy, and relatively unknown to power system designers.

At the start of my engineering career, I accepted a research project to characterize the behavior of light transmission through D-type optical fibers, with the fibers subjected to an acid bath for several hours. I noticed a new oscilloscope that no one was using and acquired it for my work. Having no prior experience writing oscilloscope control and measurement analysis software, I immediately began working on the new oscilloscope. After two weeks of developing test setups and writing software, I started encountering some unexpected problems during my initial tests. As I was new to this type of work, I asked an experienced engineer for assistance.
