Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) are essential for reducing vehicle charging times. A typical vehicle can take between 24 and 36 hours to charge using a standard household outlet. An EVCS provides a single-phase or three-phase power supply with a mains voltage of 230 V or 400 V, thus charging electric vehicles much faster. For safety reasons, communication between the charging station and the connected electric vehicle must be established before supplying any output voltage. Adapters, such as the new Fluke FEV300, are vital equipment used in the installation and mandatory periodic checks of Mode 3 EVCS, which offer accelerated charging from 3.7 kW to 22 kW.

The testing of electric vehicle charging stations (EVBS) must be carried out at regular intervals. Local, international, and European standards, such as IEC/HD 60364-6, IEC/HD 60364-7-722, and IEC/EN 61851-1, must be followed during installation and testing. The safety and communication functions of an EVBS must also be accurately tested to ensure the safety and efficiency of the electrical system so that it can be used safely by EV owners. Required tests include conductor continuity, insulation resistance, automatic disconnection of the supply (loop impedance, RCD or RCD-DD), and functional tests. All of these can be performed using a multifunction installation tester such as the Fluke 1663 or Fluke 1664FC.

The FEV300 adapter is compatible with Fluke multifunction installation testers used for ECVE installation and commissioning, as well as for routine maintenance testing. The FEV300 adapter can also be connected to Fluke's range of handheld multimeters or oscilloscopes for troubleshooting.

Hans-Dieter Schuessele, Fluke Applications and Technology Expert, notes: “The energy transferred from the ECVE (Electric Vehicle Electricity Exchanger) was previously used primarily in industrial settings and is now being supplied directly to private vehicles. Testing these high-power electrical systems under voltage is essential to ensure the safety of end users and the professionals responsible for installing and maintaining this vital equipment.”

“The new FEV300 adapter includes notable safety features such as a touch electrode function that quickly visualizes high-risk ground faults and improved safety plugs covered with plastic caps to protect the connectors in humid environments. The safety of the new Fluke FEV300 adapter is superior to that of other competing products on the market.”.
