Plastic components in the medical, electronics, and automotive industries are undergoing increasing miniaturization, with integrated electronics, complex designs, and thinner plastic walls. Conventional welding equipment with high or abrupt firing forces prevents customers from safely welding small or fragile parts. To address this challenge, Emerson has developed an advanced electromechanical drive system that provides unprecedented control and positioning accuracy. This system leverages Branson's more than 70 years of experience in ultrasonic applications and combines servomechanisms, software optimization, and patented dynamic tracking to deliver a wide range of firing forces, including the lowest in the industry, ensuring complete welding accuracy and control. The advanced drive system also enables the GSX to improve positioning accuracy, making faster, high-performance welding of very fragile and complex components possible.

The highly configurable GSX welding platform allows customers to accommodate numerous different part types and applications by employing a range of welding parameters and drive modes during a single weld. This ensures optimal, robust, and high-quality welds, resulting in fewer rejects. Thanks to the use of a multi-core processor and a linear encoder, the advanced multi-level drive system can be instantly adjusted based on real-time feedback. This guarantees the same level of accuracy and repeatability across different welding setups.

The modular GSX platform forms the basis for a wide range of models to be launched over the next two years, each designed to meet the specific application needs of the customer. The platform can be configured for all customer environments, from standalone desktop systems to semi-automated and fully automated production lines. Thanks to its easy integration into a digital environment and the standardized transfer of relevant data, the GSX platform is compatible with the Industry 4.0/IIoT concept, providing access to actionable diagnostic and performance data and supporting improvements in production efficiency, traceability, and maintenance.

Increasingly demanding production deadlines, which must be met to guarantee a project's expected return on investment, are compromised by a loss of operator experience and technical knowledge. To help reduce potential knowledge gaps, the GSX platform features simple and intuitive software, supported by 4" and 12" touchscreen HMIs, enabling operators to perform their work faster, correct settings, and reduce application testing time. This leads to faster start-ups—up to 60% in most applications—with guaranteed weld quality and increased production efficiency. By keeping alignment and configuration information within the unit, a GSX ultrasonic head and corresponding tooling can be replaced in less than five minutes, compared to conventional ultrasonic welding equipment, which can take more than an hour. The ability to execute changeovers more quickly allows for welding a wide variety of components with minimal disruption to production schedules.

“To remain competitive, manufacturers must bring their products to market faster to maximize profitability,” said William Vaughan, Vice President of Global Marketing, Assembly Technologies, Emerson. “Branson’s GSX platform delivers six sigma quality levels, repeatability, traceability, and increased production to ensure the expected return on investment for a product line.”.
