The free document, Programmable Logic Controllers and IEC 61010-2-201, provides an overview of PLC requirements as presented in IEC 61010-2-201, along with the technical modifications manufacturers must address regarding the certification process for new and modified PLC designs. It is now available for download at: http://bit.ly/PLCwp.
Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) – introduced in the late 1960s – have become essential for the operation of all types of production equipment, particularly in industrial plants. Recently, PLC requirements have been harmonized to reduce the regulatory compliance burden for manufacturers. The technical requirements were harmonized in the 2013 publication of IEC 61010-2-201 Part 2-201. Effective April 2016, IEC 61010-2-201 will serve as the basis for PLC certification.
To expand upon the new PLC document, UL is also offering a training course for PLC product designers and compliance engineers. The course covers the main key elements of UL61010-1 and the main differences between UL508 and IEC 61131-2, including:
• Differences between UL 508 and IEC 61131-2 | Between UL 508 and IEC 61010-1,-2-201
• How the transition to IEC 61010-2-201 affects existing certified products and new product shipments
• Specific clauses in IEC 61010-2-201 Part 1: General requirements
• Specific clauses in IEC 61010-2-201 Part 2: Particular requirements for control equipment
• How combining UL and IEC requirements can aid in international certification
• End-use applications certified to IEC 61010-2-201
