The new platform combines Eggtronic's EPIC™ combo controller with Renesas' high-voltage GaN device, the TP70H150G4LSG (700 V, 150 mΩ RDS(on)), offering an unprecedented combination of extreme efficiency, excellent value for money, and a simplified system architecture.

Unlike conventional high-power USB-C adapters, which rely on expensive LLC, asymmetric half-bridge (AHB), or active clamp flyback (ACF) topologies, the new reference design achieves efficiencies close to 96%, while maintaining the bill of materials cost of a traditional QR flyback converter.

The platform also offers excellent efficiency across the entire operating range, including 94.5% efficiency with a 90 VAC input and outstanding performance at light loads, enabling it to meet the latest DOE Tier VII energy efficiency requirements.

The core of the solution is Eggtronic's EPIC™ Combined Controller, which integrates all major control functions into a single device, including:
Totem Pole Power Factor Correction (PFC),
Isolated Primary-Side Regulation
, Synchronous Rectification,
Patented Ultra-Low Latency Isolated Communication, and
USB Power Delivery Protocol Management.
The platform's Totem Pole PFC overcomes two of the most common limitations of conventional implementations—Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) performance and efficiency with light loads.

The PFC stage powers Eggtronic's exclusive QuarEgg™ regenerative flyback architecture, which uses a single switch on the primary side to achieve higher efficiency and lower system cost than LLC, AHB, and ACF converters, while maintaining the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of a QR flyback design.

“The demand for compact, cost-effective, and high-efficiency USB-C power adapters continues to grow rapidly,” said Igor Spinella, founder and CEO of Eggtronic. “By combining Renesas’ exceptional GaN technology with our EPIC™ combo controller, we’ve created a platform that significantly raises the bar in both efficiency and cost-effectiveness. We believe this benchmark design offers original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a very attractive path to the next generation of high-end power adapters.”.

Rohan Samsi, Vice President of Renesas' GaN Business Division, added: "Renesas is committed to enabling the next generation of highly efficient and cost-effective power solutions through our advanced GaN technology. The reference platform is a direct result of our collaboration with Eggtronic, which combines complementary expertise in power conversion and digital control. It provides customers with a solid foundation for developing compact, high-performance power systems, such as USB-C charging, at a competitive cost.".

The 140W USB-C Power Delivery reference board is now available and is intended to accelerate the development of high-performance adapters for laptops and other USB-C powered devices.
