control systemIn version 8 of Simatic PCS 7, data exchange between the Comos facility management software and the PCS 7 engineering tools has been improved, and the engineering workflow has been simplified. This results in higher-quality planning and easier traceability of changes. The new version of PCS 7 features the integrated and scalable Process Historian long-term archiving system, which allows for the centralized, real-time archiving of process data from multiple projects. This enables users to quickly access archived data and reports to optimize production and assets. Reports can also be easily created and modified using the standard Microsoft Reporting Service tool. In addition to Windows XP, version 8 of Simatic PCS 7 is also compatible with Windows 7 (64-bit and 32-bit).

PCS 7 has also been improved in terms of Profinet and Profibus communication, as well as in the areas of high availability, redundancy, and controllers. The high-performance, high-availability Simatic S7-400H controllers offer increased power and new features. They feature greater I/O capacity and an integrated Profinet interface with a 2-port switch. This allows for the configuration of high-availability, redundant ring topologies and the connection of redundant system peripherals. Furthermore, the controller range has been expanded with the addition of the 416-5H CPU. With 16 MB of working memory, its performance falls between that of the 412-5H (1 MB), 414-5H (4 MB), and 417-5H (32 MB).

Version 8 adds new export/import functions to the Process Device Manager Simatic PDM, the tool for operating, adjusting, maintaining, and diagnosing field devices. Users benefit from expanded system documentation, integrated statistics, easier operation, and greater convenience when replacing devices. The Advanced Process Library (APL) now includes new blocks for managing motors, starters, and compact drives; the Advanced Engineering System (AdvES) features a new type concept based on ISA 88 (Control Module Types) and a user interface with a progress bar. The Industry Library includes new technology blocks, for example, for heating, cooling, and air conditioning applications. A new PLC completes the new features of Simatic PCS 7 V8: the AS mEC RTX is equipped with central I/O modules and optimized for small applications and OEM environments.
