MPLAB ICD 4 is an in-circuit programming and debugging (ICD) development tool for PIC® microcontrollers, including the latest PIC32C MCUs and Microchip's dsPIC® range of digital signal controllers, via the MPLAB X integrated development environment (IDE).
This latest version of MPLAB ICD not only includes all the features of the ICD 3 debugger, for example, compatibility with all ICD 3 printheads, but also incorporates improved features, such as increased speed thanks to a faster processor and larger RAM capacity.

The significant speed improvement of the MPLAB ICD 4 is achieved thanks to a 32-bit MCU operating at 300 MHz. With faster processing and a 2 MB buffer, the result is a product that is up to twice as fast as its predecessor.

The MPLAB ICD 4 is housed in a rugged, black, ice hockey puck-shaped enclosure. The top of the enclosure is made of brushed aluminum and includes an LED strip to indicate the device's debugging status. Key features of the new ICD 4 include: a wider target voltage range—from 1.2 to 5.5 V—; an optional 1 A external power supply; pull-up/pull-down processing for the target interface; data integrity checking; programmable debugging speed adjustment for optimized programming; and JTAG debugging capability.

In addition to the MPLAB ICD 4 in-circuit debug module, the kit includes a USB cable, a 6-inch RJ-11 modular cable, and an interface test module. The MPLAB ICD connects to the PC via a high-speed USB 3.0-compatible interface and to the target via an RJ-11 connector, which is also compatible with MPLAB ICD 3 and MPLAB REAL ICE™ systems. Compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, the MPLAB X IDE features a powerful, user-friendly graphical user interface that simplifies design processes for customers migrating from one PIC microcontroller to another.
