Thanks to the combination of its proprietary code and Microchip's fully functional PD stack, designers enjoy maximum flexibility to create differentiated product ranges and can choose from a wide variety of Microchip SmartHubs, microcontrollers, and standalone PD solutions for their USB systems.
Microchip's PSF solution offers open-source power supply code and a complete programming environment. This eliminates vendor lock-in and makes it easy for users to program microcontrollers and instantly modify PD code as their system evolves. Customers thus benefit from this revolutionary industry solution, enabling them to determine their product's future, reduce time to market, and streamline the bill of materials.
This software and hardware environment allows developers to choose from a growing family of Microchip controllers to provide power functionality, such as the new standalone UPD301B and UPD301C PD controllers . The open nature of the PD architecture makes it easy for customers to add a USB-C/PD port to a wide range of embedded applications and to repurpose unused pins or CPU memory for other system functions. It is also compatible with various Microchip SAM and PIC® microcontrollers , and dsPIC® DSC (Digital Signal Controllers) . The PSF solution provides designers with the ability to supply power to an existing Microchip microcontroller infrastructure by incorporating the UPD350 PD transceiver or integrating power into more complex product lines with proprietary system code.
“Thanks to our new PSF environment, all Microchip USB-C-compatible microcontrollers and standalone controllers now share the same PD codebase,” said Charles Forni, vice president of Microchip’s USB and Networking business unit. “This code is provided free of charge to customers and is easy to configure and modify, allowing them to introduce new features and system updates without requiring a manufacturer to customize the code. Microchip’s PSF solution changes how USB-C PD is integrated into customer systems.”.
Development tools
The PSF software solution is compatible with Microchip's MPLAB® X IDE development environment. The PSF evaluation board , which incorporates the microcontroller and the UPD350 PD, is now available.
Prices and availability
Microchip's PSF (Power Delivery Software) environment can be downloaded from the Microchip website . The UPD301C is priced at $1.50 for orders of 10,000 units.
