As software vendors make more R-Car hypervisors available, OEMs and Tier 1 companies will have a wider range of hypervisor options and will be able to select the optimal hypervisor for the combination of the guest operating system being run, and for the cluster system of gauges and cloud services used. This will increase the flexibility of the integrated instrument cluster system and connected car development, and will accelerate development.
The third-generation R-Car SoCs were designed assuming they would be used with a hypervisor. The Arm® CPU cores, graphics cores, video/audio IP, and other features include virtualization capabilities. Originally, for software vendors to utilize these features, they would have needed to understand both the R-Car hardware manuals and the R-Car virtualization features, and begin researching how to implement a hypervisor. Now, by following the development guides in the R-Car Virtualization Support Package, software vendors can not only easily leverage these features but also take full advantage of R-Car's advanced capabilities. Furthermore, by providing sample software that can be used as a reference, this package supports rapid development.
By growing its ecosystem with partner companies, including hypervisor providers, Renesas plans to further expand its line of virtualization packages, a combination of a hypervisor and guest operating system, and aims to lead the deployment of virtualization in vehicles to contribute to the realization of a safe and secure automotive society.
Availability
The R-Car virtualization support package is scheduled to be available from July 2018.
