Economic factors, particularly the goal of increasing net profits without compromising safety, are driving the evolution of safety systems, from hardwired systems to integrated and networked configurations. The more designers can integrate the safety functions of a control system with non-safety functions, the greater the opportunities to minimize equipment redundancy, improve productivity, and reduce costs.
