Given the rapidly evolving pandemic situation, Messe Frankfurt has postponed its world trade fair for lighting and building technology to autumn 2022. Last December, intensive discussions with customers and cooperation partners led to the exploration of alternatives to the original March dates. When it comes to robots, bigger isn't always better. Someday, a swarm of insect-sized robots might pollinate a field or search for survivors in the rubble of a collapsed building.
MIT researchers have demonstrated the existence of tiny drones capable of moving with insect-like agility and endurance, which could potentially perform these tasks. The soft actuators that power these microrobots are very durable, but require much higher voltages than similarly sized rigid actuators. The featherweight robots cannot carry the necessary power electronics that would allow them to fly on their own.
