Over the next two years, around 40,000 nickel-based Sunica.plus batteries will be deployed in some 775 wells across the field, where they provide energy storage and backup for industrial control systems in oil wells and for corrosion protection systems.

Kentz is currently working on a $190 million contract for Qatar Petroleum to supply a dedicated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) network infrastructure to monitor Dukhan's 775 oil wells from designated stations. Kentz's scope of work also includes preventing external corrosion damage to the wellbore tubing by installing an impressed current cathodic protection system.

The SCADA network and corrosion protection systems will be powered by solar energy from photovoltaic (PV) panels working in conjunction with Sunica.plus batteries to provide essential backup energy storage, ensuring uninterrupted operation. Saft developed the Sunica.plus battery specifically for these types of off-grid, stand-alone solar installations, where its robust nickel-based construction and high cycle life ensure long battery life and low maintenance, even under irregular charging conditions and temperature fluctuations from -20°C to +50°C.

“Thousands of Saft Sunica.plus batteries are currently installed in off-grid solar plants worldwide, where they have already proven their unrivaled performance and long lifespan. Kentz’s decision to select them for this prestigious Qatar Petroleum project in the Dukhan oil field is further confirmation that the Sunica.plus is the ideal choice for installations in remote, hard-to-reach locations where reliability is essential and routine maintenance is costly in terms of both time and money,” says Xavier Delacroix, Managing Director of Saft IBG’s division.
