CAF is building new LRV (Light Rail Vehicle) trams for Tallinn's operator, Tallinn Linnatranspordi Aktsiaseltsm. These trams are a vital part of the extension of Tallinn's LRV network, which will eventually extend to the city's airport. The first phase, creating a new return loop around a new shopping center, is planned for 2015-2016, while the second phase, replacing the main line railway to the airport, is planned for 2020-2022. The new vehicles will initially operate on lines 3 and 4; routes to Kopli may be added at a later date.

Saft had already developed a comprehensive battery solution based on its MRX rail batteries for standard deployment on CAF's "Urbos 100" platform. However, CAF is familiar with the extreme winter conditions in Tallinn, where temperatures can plummet to -50°C, as these are some of the most demanding conditions a tram project has ever faced. To ensure reliable backup power for the auxiliary systems, which are essential for passenger safety and are already fail-safe, CAF placed its first major order for new-generation, nickel-based (low-temperature) SRA LT batteries.

"The tram project in Tallinn further strengthens Saft's long-term partnership with CAF in supplying on-board battery systems for strategic rail projects worldwide," says Ghislain Lescuyer, Chairman of Saft's Executive Committee. "It also confirms the ability of our new SRA LT batteries to perform even under the most demanding conditions.".

The SRA LT design offers higher capacity at low temperatures than standard batteries, while its optimized electrical performance and high energy density make it a more compact and lightweight battery to handle the required load. Its robust and reliable construction also ensures a long and predictable lifespan.

A battery system comprising 20 SRA 310 LT cells, with a nominal voltage of 24 V and a capacity of 310 Ah, is being installed in each of the 16 "Urbos AXL" trams.
