ABB has unveiled a modular and scalable "plug and play" microgrid in response to the growing global demand for flexible technologies applicable to electricity distribution in developing countries. The container-mounted, low-cost microgrid is suitable for both developed and emerging economies. It will help maximize the use of renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels used in power generation.
ABB's technology, with its PowerStore Battery and Microgrid Plus control system, as well as a cloud-based remote service, can supply electricity to remote areas and ensure efficient and uninterrupted supply to communities and industries, both during scheduled and unforeseen grid power outages.
All the equipment necessary for the microgrid to function—the converter, ABB's dedicated Microgrid Plus control system, and the storage batteries—has been integrated into a single container for faster and safer installation. The customer can choose the microgrid configuration to integrate solar or wind power, be connected to the main grid, or be powered by a diesel generator, depending on the specific conditions and application.
ABB's modular microgrid is compact and comes in four pre-designed variants ranging from 50 to 4,600 kW to suit every customer's needs. Standard features include the ability to operate grid-connected or off-grid with seamless transition. The entire system is containerized for easy transport, rapid installation, and on-site commissioning. Operation and maintenance are facilitated by a cloud-based remote service system.
Claudio Facchin, president of ABB's Power Grids division, stated: “Our modular, standardized, and scalable microgrid will enable low-cost access to reliable electricity in both rural and urban applications; and it is a plug-and-play solution. It is yet another example of ABB's ongoing commitment to innovation and reducing environmental impact, facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels; all of which are key elements of ABB's Next Level strategy.”.
