The new RGS series represents ROHM's broad range of AEC-Q101 compliant IGBTs, available in both 1200V and 650V variants. This series offers class-leading low conduction loss, contributing to smaller sizes and improved application efficiency.
In recent years, a growing number of automakers have been offering electric vehicles in response to increasing environmental awareness and rising fuel costs. The rise in electric vehicles is also increasing the demand for electric compressors, which are often driven by IGBTs. Internal combustion engine vehicles have traditionally used the heat dissipated from the engines themselves as a heat source for the cabin. However, the demand for systems using circulating hot water with a CTP heater as a heat source has been steadily increasing. Low-frequency IGBTs are commonly used in inverters and switches for these applications. Especially in electric vehicles, the energy consumption of the compressor and heater impacts driving range, making improved efficiency desirable.
Another trend in this market is the increase in battery capacity to improve autonomy. Especially in Europe, high-voltage (800V) batteries require power devices with low losses and higher non-disruptive voltages, increasing the demand for both 650V and 1200V IGBTs.
In response, ROHM has added four new 1200V IGBT devices and expanded its range of AEC-Q101 compliant IGBTs. This class-leading, low-conduction-loss IGBT enables compact and highly efficient designs. The 1200V devices, with a short-circuit withstand of 10 µsec (Tj=25°C), also ensure reliability for automotive applications.
Key Features
1. Class-leading low conduction loss
The optimized device structure reduces VCE(sat) to 1.70V, enabling an approximate 10% to 15% reduction in conduction losses compared to conventional products.
For electric compressors and CTP heaters, conduction loss is a more important characteristic than switching characteristics due to the low operating frequency.
2. Supports a wider range of applications with a broad product range.
ROHM has developed four new IGBTs and offers a total of 11 devices, including 650V devices. This series includes both simple IGBT types and those with built-in freewheeling diodes, allowing customers to select the most suitable device.
