Utilizing the latest high-frequency switching topology technology and proprietary digital control firmware to optimize efficiency and voltage regulation, the Powerbox GB350 buck converter module is the first in its class capable of operating safely when exposed to high-radiation magnetic fields of 2 to 4 Tesla. The GB350 offers a 350W output power, and when higher power levels are required, it can be paralleled using an interleaved mode, thus reducing EMI.
Medical and industrial applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and particle accelerators (PA), generate high magnetic fields to induce the RF energy needed to activate hydrogen nuclei in MRI or to accelerate particles in research and industrial equipment.
Modern MRI systems typically generate 1.5 to 4 Tesla, rendering conventional power supplies using ferrite material ineffective, as the inductance saturation caused by the MRI magnet disrupts energy transfer. To avoid parasitic saturation, power supplies are traditionally located outside the protected operating room. Remote installation of power supplies requires long cables with the resulting losses, and it is also a significant challenge to power the latest generation of measuring equipment that requires stable and well-regulated voltages under rapid transient load conditions.
To reduce energy consumption and ensure the quality level required by the integrated equipment, system manufacturers are now integrating local power supplies close to the load. However, placing the equipment directly in the radiated magnetic field requires an innovative power solution, known as 'coreless power units,' and a state-of-the-art switching power stage.
Designed to meet this demand and ensure the highest efficiency and a firmly regulated output voltage under any load condition, the Powerbox GB350 coreless power module is fully controlled by a digital processor that manages the entire unit, from switching parameters (e.g., dead time and duty cycle optimization) to output voltage standardization. To ensure a high level of flexibility and the ability to reconfigure the power unit's characteristics when equipment manufacturers update hardware or implement a software revision, the GB350's microcontroller can be programmed with optimized configuration files downloaded via the digital interface.

The standard GB350 platform provides a rated current of 50A and preset output voltages of 6.8, 3.3, or 1.6V. As part of Powerbox's suite of customized power solutions, other output voltages are available upon request.
The GB350 has a switching frequency of 600kHz. Equipment installed within magnetic fields often requires higher power levels than 350W and also very low EMI. With a 600kHz switching frequency and its 4-phase interleaved mode, the GB350 has a resulting output frequency of 2.4 MHz. This enables easier filtering and extremely fast response times. The unit also includes EMI shielding to reduce radiated emissions.
As part of Powerbos' suite of customized solutions, the GB350 and products based on this technology are tested, verified, and certified according to the end customer's specifications.
