Microchip announces its ISO 26262 functional safety packages for dsPIC33C digital signal controllers (DSCs), PIC18 microcontrollers, and AVRs that accelerate the development of safety-critical designs aimed at ASIL B and ASIL C safety and certification levels.
This functional safety ecosystem for the DSC PIC33C consists of:
• AEC Q100 Grade 0 approved functional safety for the DSC dsPIC33C with hardware safety features
• SGS TÜV Saar certified failure modes for ASIL B, FMEDA (Effects and Diagnostic Analysis) report, and FSM (Functional Safety Manual)
• TÜV Rheinland certified functional safety diagnostic libraries for designs certified up to ASIL C
• A functional safety reference application that shows the steps required to develop approved designs and the resulting warranty for ASIL B or ASIL C
• Various functional safety analysis and certification reports that facilitate approval and certification
The functional safety ecosystem for PIC18 and AVR microcontrollers consists of:
• Functional safety with AEC Q100 Grade 1 approval for PIC18-Q84 microcontrollers with CAN FD and AVR DA microcontrollers with LIN interfaces, in both cases with hardware compatible with capacitive touch sensors
• Failure modes for ASIL B with SGS TÜV Saar certification, FMEDA (Effects and Diagnostic Analysis) report and FSM (Functional Safety Manual)
• Functional safety diagnostic libraries
• Certificates and certification reports for ASIL B that facilitate approval and certification
Whether an engineer has no prior experience in functional safety ISO 26262 or is an expert, Microchip has demonstrated its expertise and development of solutions to help you meet your functional safety and design certification requirements, as well as to minimize cost, risk, and development time.
The functional safety packages listed below, along with our development tools supplied with safety documents, enable engineers to develop certified systems.
Microchip offers three ISO 26262 functional safety packages that can be purchased to assist customers with varying levels of expertise and at different stages of their evaluation and design cycles:
• The Basic Functional Safety Package provides essential resources such as the ASIL B-certified FMEDA report and Safety Manual to help customers get started in evaluating functional safety levels and designing safety-critical automotive applications.
• The Starter Functional Safety Package offers the ASIL B-certified FMEDA report and Safety Manual, a reference application, and ASIL C-certified diagnostic libraries to help designers understand the ISO 26262-certified development process and the reports required for homologation.
• The Complete Functional Safety Package provides a comprehensive solution for both beginners and experts to simplify the design and certification of safety-critical automotive applications. In addition to the Starter Package contents, the Complete Package includes certified diagnostic libraries with source code and associated safety analysis reports for designs certified up to ASIL C.
Along with functional safety packages, Microchip offers a TÜV SÜD-certified design tool suite for our MPLAB® development tool ecosystem to facilitate tool certification. This includes a TÜV SÜD-certified MPLAB XC functional safety compiler, a functional safety manual for the compiler, and comprehensive safety plans and classification and certification reports for the compiler, the MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE), MPLAB Code Coverage, and all programs within the MPLAB development ecosystem. Microchip also offers functionally safe CAN FD and LIN transceivers and other auxiliary devices, such as voltage monitors, that can be used with functionally safe DSCs and microcontrollers in a wide variety of automotive applications.
“As the level of sophistication and electronics in cars increases, functional safety requirements in automotive designs become much more demanding. To help its customers develop safety applications quickly, with minimal risk and within a tight budget, Microchip has greatly expanded its offering of certified safety documentation and self-diagnostic libraries, development tools, and technical support,” said Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip’s MCU16 business unit. “We are a leading supplier in the automotive market and will continue to enhance our functional safety support to provide our customers with a competitive advantage.”.
“As an accredited certification body for Functional Safety, TÜV Rheinland offers independent auditing, verification, consulting, and certification services related to ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 for quality and safety,” said Thomas Steffens, Head of Functional Safety and Cybersecurity Certification at TÜV Rheinland. “As a result of our consulting based on our ISO 26262 certification program, we confirmed that Microchip’s Safety Diagnostic Libraries for dsPIC33C DSCs meet ASIL C requirements. Therefore, these diagnostic libraries can be used in automotive safety applications up to ASIL C.”.
Development Tools
The DSC dsPIC33C for functional safety according to ISO 26262, as well as the PIC18 and AVR microcontrollers, are compatible with these TÜV SÜD certified tools: MPLAB XC16 and MPLAB XC8 functional safety compilers (SW006022-FS and SW006021-FS), MPLAB Code Coverage (SW006026-COV), MPLAB X IDE, the MPLAB development ecosystem debuggers/programmers and the safety documentation package to facilitate tool homologation.
