These microcontrollers expand upon the well-known PIC32MX1/2 series, comprised of low-cost, space-efficient 32-bit microcontrollers. They now offer higher-capacity Flash and RAM options with a powerful set of peripherals at a lower cost. The PIC32MX1/2 provides a wide range of features, including I2S for digital audio, high-capacity memory configurations and 83 DMIPS for running Bluetooth audio and advanced control applications, CTMU for capacitive touch sensing, an 8-bit PMP for graphics or external memory, a 10-bit, 1 MSPS, 13-channel A/D converter, and serial communication peripherals with the PIC32MX2 series for USB device/host/OTG functionality.
In addition to hardware peripherals, Microchip's new MPLAB® Harmony software development environment for supporting these devices simplifies the development cycle by integrating Microchip's licensing, resale, and support, along with third-party middleware, drivers, libraries, and real-time operating systems. Available software packages supplied by Microchip include Bluetooth audio development packages, audio equalizer filter libraries, various decoders (such as AAC, MP3, and SBC), sample rate conversion libraries, USB stacks, and graphics and touch libraries. These rapidly reduce development time for applications such as Bluetooth digital audio, consumer audio, industrial applications, and general embedded control.
The PIC32MX1/2 microcontrollers target low-cost consumer applications such as Bluetooth speakers, music player docking stations, noise-canceling headphones, infotainment systems, clock radios, and soundbars in entertainment systems, as well as flat-panel displays with buttons and controls, and USB device/host/OTG connectivity. Some applications in the medical and industrial markets include noise-canceling headphones for industrial use and displays with touch-sensing capabilities.
The PIC32MX1/MX2 series is supported by the free MPLAB® X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and the MPLAB XC32 Compiler for PIC32 from Microchip. Special application development tools that support the PIC32MX1/MX2 series include the PIC32MX270F256D Plug-in Module for the Explorer 16 Development Board (MA320014) priced at $35 and the PIC32MX270F256D Plug-in Module for the Bluetooth Audio Development Kit (MA320013) priced at $25.
These new PIC32MX1/2 microcontrollers are supplied in 28-pin QFN, SOIC, SPDIP and SSOP packages and in 44-pin QFN, TQFP and VTLA packages.
