In the case of a frequency converter, chokes are installed both at the input, where they perform feedback, and at the output, where they act as filter chokes. Thanks to their compact design and low noise, chokes can be used in converter intermediate circuits and are available in both single-choke and common-mode versions. The component cores are made of sintered iron powder materials with low magnetostriction, specifically developed by SMP for each application. These materials have very low eddy current and hysteresis losses, resulting in high energy efficiency.
Another requirement is a low leakage field. This is achieved through the enclosed construction of the components. The compact design allows other components to be positioned around the choke without being magnetically affected. This compact construction results in a volume reduction of approximately 25 percent.
SMP inductive components are used not only in frequency converter applications but also in the following industrial sectors: power electronics, automation and signal processing, railway technology, electromobility, marine engineering, electromedicine, energy supply (including renewable energy), and the aerospace industry.
All SMP inductive components are characterized by low losses, excellent EMC performance, low noise, and maintenance-free operation. The components are designed for applications with currents up to 3000 A and frequencies up to 500 kHz, and for special applications, even frequencies up to 2 MHz. The materials, which are custom-developed and manufactured for each customer, have a high saturation inductance of up to 2 Tesla. The components are available in sizes from 19 mm to 300 mm, with weights from 50 g to 130 kg and temperature class H (up to 180°C). Depending on the application, they are available with protection ratings up to IP66. All components comply with RoHS and REACH standards and are CE and EAC certified. The materials used are UL approved.
