The EtherNet/IP drive compatibility available on the Allen-Bradley Kinetix 6500 servo drive eliminates the need for a dedicated motion network and allows the use of high-performance drives, I/O, smart drives, and other EtherNet/IP connected devices on a common network. When used with the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix programmable automation controller (PAC), the Kinetix 6500 drive offers greater machine design flexibility, improved system performance, and lower system cost.
The Kinetix 6500 servo drive's integrated EtherNet/IP motion uses CIP Motion (Common Industrial Protocol Motion), an extension of the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) from the Open Device Vendors Association (ODVA). CIP Motion technology combines the requirements of deterministic, real-time, closed-loop motion control while providing compliance with Ethernet standards, including IEEE 802.3 and TCP/IP. EtherNet/IP is the world's leading industrial Ethernet topology, with over 850 product lines from 250 companies and more than two million nodes sold.
The new Kinetix 6500 servo drive allows for position, speed, and torque loops, providing a high-bandwidth motion control solution. Adding the power of ODVA's CIP synchronization technology (precision clock synchronization compliant with IEEE-1588) enables the combination of multiple axes for precise, synchronized motion control.
Building on the proven performance of the Kinetix 6000 family, the Kinetix 6500 drive also offers advanced safety features, including safe stop, zero speed monitoring, safe direction monitoring, and safe maximum acceleration monitoring. These features enhance operator safety and machine efficiency by allowing monitored access to protected areas while the machine or process is running, thereby reducing downtime.
For some applications, such as clean-in-place (CIP) for food manufacturers or roller cleaning on a printing press, safe speed technology can help prevent personnel injuries while maximizing machine uptime. Operators and maintenance personnel can clean the equipment while the machine is set to one of the safe modes, reducing the need for a complete power outage or machine shutdown. This speeds up the cleaning process and increases machine availability. The ability to access the machine to remove foreign objects or jams without an emergency power shutdown also reduces waste, extends machine life, and limits the amount of power required to bring the machine back to full operating speed.
Kinetix 6500 servo drives feature an innovative modular structure that provides an adaptable platform for machine upgrades, such as increased power range. Thanks to the use of interchangeable control modules, the axis can be easily switched to a different network or safety function, allowing users to adapt more easily to new market trends or technologies while cutting upgrade costs in half. With the launch of the ControlLogix L73 and ControlLogix L75 PACs, the new drive can accept up to 128 motion control axes per controller.
The Kinetix 6500 servo drive is ideal for motion control applications where high performance, efficiency, and safety are essential, such as in food processing, packaging, and printing machines, as well as other types of machines requiring position control.
