“As the manufacturer with the largest portfolio of wireless power coils, we’ve been receiving increasing requests from customers looking for higher-power applications beyond the Qi standard,” explains Cem Som, Division Manager of Wireless Power Transfer at Würth Elektronik eiSos. “With our development kit, we address such applications up to 200 W. The connection can be scaled from 10 W to several kW. The currents in the resonant circuit are sinusoidal, ensuring optimal EMC performance. The key: By changing the switching frequency, the output voltage is modified, allowing data to be transferred from the receiver to the transmitter.” Potential application areas include Industry 4.0, IoT, and medical technology. Wherever a harsh environment suggests avoiding cable and connector openings in the housing, transmitting status messages while wirelessly charging the battery can be beneficial.
Operating Principle:
The 760308EMP-WPT-200W development kit includes a power supply, a transmitter unit, and a receiver unit.
The transmitter assembly consists of an integral bridge and a resonant circuit. It is formed by connecting the WPT coil and resonant capacitors in series. Due to the phase shift between the voltage and current in the resonant circuit, the system operates in ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching) mode. This results in very high overall system efficiency.
A synchronous rectifier with filtering and backshielding is used on the receiver side. Furthermore, AM modulation of the alternating field between the transmitter and receiver allows any data to be transmitted from the receiver to the transmitter.
An example application that can be replicated with sensors on the receiver board's I²C interface is a mobile device transmitting sensor data to a base station during charging. All the data and documentation necessary for implementing this proprietary system are available for free download.
