The EPD Gen 2 Expansion Kit (EXT2), with its powerful App PDi utilities, allows device designers to explore EPD technology, understand how it works, and explore features such as global and rapid partial upgrades. The kit can also be used as a bridge to replace an existing display while developing a new application, simplifying the design process and accelerating time to market.
The EPD control interface and open-source control code provided by the EXT2 kit streamline EPD design, while the board provides FPC connectors that support most PDI e-paper displays.
The board also features a socket that allows it to be stacked directly onto various Texas Instruments (TI) LaunchPad™ development kits via the standardized BoosterPack™ plug-in module to enable diverse applications. The EXT2 kit supports connections with the LaunchPad MSP-EXP430F5529LP and LaunchPad MSP-EXP432P401R kits for ultra-low power applications, as well as the LaunchPad EK-TM4C123GXL kit. It will soon support the LaunchPad SimpleLink™ Wi-Fi® CC3200 kit, the LaunchPad CC2650 Bluetooth Low Energy Wireless kit, and the LaunchPad SimpleLink Sub-1 GHz CC1310 kit for IoT-enabled e-Paper designs. Designers can also use the EXT2's integrated headers to connect to an existing product design or any other development kit. Furthermore, the EXT2 offers integrated control circuitry to support EPD applications using external or internal frequency controllers (eTC or iTC) and built with different film materials.
“Our goal with this EPD expansion kit is to kick-start the development of e-paper display applications,” explained Charming Su, Director of Product and Field Applications at Pervasive Displays. He added, “We’ve included the open-source driver code and design files to remove design barriers. We also offer comprehensive technical support with troubleshooting and design services to help developers add e-paper to their designs across various consumer equipment categories, from IoT and reusable transit items to HMIs, ID badges, factory and home automation, industrial applications, and more.”
The EXT2 is available through Digi-Key and other local distributors, priced at $25.
E-paper is a low-power display technology. Power is only consumed when the display changes, and no power is required to display information, allowing for longer battery life, even for small coin cell batteries.
