By using more efficient electric motor systems, such as those incorporating variable frequency drives (VFDs), it is possible to reduce electricity consumption by a quarter, which would represent a 10% reduction in global electricity use.
To replace older three-phase induction motors, the ideal solution is to use brushless DC motors with variable frequency control. Using BLDC motors provides high efficiency, improved control capabilities by optimizing system operation and efficiency, and a high power factor if a power factor correction (PFC) circuit is designed.
Due to their complexity and overall cost, the use of BLDC motors has been challenging. To facilitate their adoption, MEAN WELL has developed a series of BLDC products, such as the VFD series, which will be distributed in Spain and Portugal by Electrónica OLFER. These devices feature power levels with power factor correction (PFC), six-switch three-phase gate controllers, and multiple sensors.
This platform offers a convenient hardware solution for BLDC motor system designers, enabling efficient motor control and leveraging VFD capabilities for other critical functions. Like all other standard MEAN WELL products, the VFD series motor drive modules are readily available at competitive prices.
To further lower the design threshold, a reference board with a highly integrated motor control IC is available. This board allows designers to quickly configure and design systems via an intuitive PC interface, simplifying tasks such as entering motor parameters and considering load requirements.
