The new microcontroller devices constitute a next-generation smart meter platform for industrial, commercial, and industrial IoT applications. This platform stands out for its increased performance up to 200 MHz and high scalability with up to 560 KB of SRAM.
To provide developers with optimal flexibility for product customization, the PIC32CXMT family is offered in three versions based on a single Arm® Cortex®-M4F core, a dual Arm Cortex-M4 core, and a system-on-chip (SoC) device. The MPL460 PLC modem integrates the line driver for signal amplification, reducing the bill of materials and maintaining peak-performance signal injection efficiency above 40% thanks to its Class D topology. The PLC modem helps increase efficiency and reliability based on the power delivered to the load and the power drawn from the source. The result is an overall reduction in power consumption from the source during transmission.
“The new PIC32CXMT microcontrollers, along with an MPL460 PLC modem, offer unparalleled scalability and performance for a wide range of meter architectures,” said Kourosh Boutorabi, director of Microchip’s Smart Energy business unit. “This second generation of our successful meter products demonstrates our commitment to providing a broad portfolio of SoCs that enables a flexible and secure smart meter platform with options to choose from best-in-class metrology and advanced connectivity.”
The platform offers several transceiver solutions, including radio/PHY, PLC/PHY, and a hybrid PLC+RF solution. A metrology and communications software package compliant with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards is also available for meters with accuracy down to 0.2 percent. It is also compatible with wired and wireless communication standards such as G3-PLC and PRIME.
Because smart meter devices are connected, security is a paramount requirement in any design. The PIC32CXMT microcontrollers offer integrated standard and proprietary security features to optimize performance and memory utilization.
