As the European industrial Linux, ELinOS 8 combines enhanced cybersecurity, transparency in the software supply chain, regulatory compliance, and high hardware flexibility in a unified development environment that helps manufacturers accelerate product development while meeting increasing security and compliance requirements.
SBOM: Embedded Security and Compliance.
Security is the core of ELinOS 8. The new version incorporates the integrated generation of a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), providing total transparency of the software supply chain and simplifying vulnerability management throughout the product lifecycle.
Automatically generated during the build process, the Software Software Inventory (SBOM) provides a complete inventory of all software packages, libraries, files, and versions included in the system. Generated in the standard SPDX v3 JSON format, it allows you to:
• Manage the software component inventory
• Perform vulnerability and security analysis
• Verify compliance with open-source software licenses
• Ensure traceability of software dependencies
• Facilitate compliance with regulatory and customer requirements.
The SBOM is automatically generated for each ELinOS project without any additional user intervention, ensuring that the documentation always accurately reflects the deployed software.
To help manufacturers adapt to new cybersecurity regulations, ELinOS 8 incorporates tools and workflows that facilitate compliance with the requirements set by the European Union's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Combining complete software transparency with security reporting capabilities, ELinOS provides a solid foundation for developing compliant embedded products.
Advanced Security Hardening:
ELinOS 8 incorporates significant security enhancements for embedded and industrial applications.
The ANSSI Compliance Verification Test Suite allows developers to assess the system's hardening level against the recommendations of the Agence Nationale de la Sécurité des Systèmes d'Information (ANSSI), the French National Cybersecurity Agency. The suite validates the system configuration against a set of recognized hardening rules and generates detailed reports, including an assessment of the hardening level achieved and practical recommendations for improving security.
Additional enhancements include:
• Enabling GCC Level 3 hardening in all ELinOS target packages to strengthen runtime protection against buffer overflows and memory-related vulnerabilities.
• New audit subsystem support for RISC-V platforms.
• Reproducible builds of the Linux kernel and root filesystem to improve software integrity and verifiability.
• Compilation machine-independent timestamps, with support for fixed compilation dates and times.
Long-term stability with Linux Kernel 6.12.
ELinOS 8 is based on the latest Linux 6.12 Long-Term Support (LTS) version, providing a stable platform backed by up to ten years of maintenance and security updates.
This allows manufacturers to align operating system support with the long lifecycles typical in sectors such as industrial automation, transportation, aerospace, defense, healthcare, and critical infrastructure.
Enhanced Hardware Support and Reduced Platform Dependence:
The new ELinOS 8 release significantly expands hardware support by incorporating new Board Support Packages (BSPs) from leading manufacturers, including NXP, Toradex, TQ-Systems, and AMD Xilinx.
Furthermore, ELinOS 8 improves BSP lifecycle management by decoupling manufacturer BSP maintenance from the main product release cycle. Customers can install ELinOS maintenance releases without affecting manufacturer-specific or project-specific BSP customizations, enabling faster deployment of security patches and maintenance updates. Additionally, new BSPs and updates to manufacturer BSPs can be distributed independently, allowing hardware support to evolve more quickly, preserving project stability, and reducing maintenance effort.
Thanks to support for a wider range of processors and boards, ELinOS 8 offers developers greater flexibility in hardware selection, reduces dependence on a specific platform, and accelerates the time to market for new embedded projects.
A single development environment for all architectures.
One of the main advantages of ELinOS is its ability to unify software development processes across large engineering organizations.
ELinOS 8 provides a unified development environment for Intel, ARM, and RISC-V architectures. Development teams use the same tools, workflows, and configuration concepts regardless of the target hardware platform.
This consistent approach eliminates the learning curve associated with each architecture, facilitates collaboration between teams, and simplifies the onboarding of new developers. Organizations can standardize embedded Linux development across different product lines by maintaining a common toolchain and development processes.
Faster than traditional Linux build systems,
ELinOS continues to differentiate itself thanks to its unique feature-based configuration model and ease of use. Unlike traditional Linux build systems, which require a high level of expertise and significant customization effort, ELinOS offers an intuitive graphical configuration wizard that allows developers to get started and be productive right away.
The platform includes over 400 pre-compiled software packages, selectable through a feature-oriented approach. ELinOS automatically configures both the Linux kernel and user space, generating a Linux system that contains only the truly necessary features.
The result is a more efficient development process and a highly optimized operating system that offers:
• A reduced attack surface
• Lower resource consumption
• Reduced complexity
• Shorter development cycles
• Easier maintenance
Long-Term Support and Flexible Security Services
To meet the diverse requirements of each project, ELinOS 8 is available with Long-Term Support (LTS). Furthermore, customers can benefit from specialized security services and expert support from SYSGO throughout the entire development and maintenance lifecycle.
Driving Secure and Sovereign Embedded Linux
: "ELinOS 8 represents the most security-focused release we have developed to date," says David Engraf, Head of Product Development at SYSGO. "With integrated SBOM generation, ANSSI-compliant hardening validation, reproducible builds, Linux 6.12 LTS, and expanded support for new BSPs, we help our customers meet the growing demands of cybersecurity and regulatory compliance while accelerating development. Furthermore, ELinOS continues to simplify embedded Linux development through a unified set of tools for Intel, ARM, and RISC-V platforms. This enables engineering teams to standardize processes, reduce complexity, and accelerate time to market."
