During wireless power transmission, the device and charging station exchange data via amplitude and frequency modulation. The software for this new wireless solution, which includes a diagnostic tool, is provided free of charge by Würth Elektronik. A small LCD display is also available as an optional hardware extension for this kit.
Autonomous vehicles, drones, and portable devices and tools can provide information data via charging: this can include measurement values or status messages about the battery and other components. This is crucial, for example, for predictive/preventive maintenance. The device, in turn, can receive commands or provide status information to the user—in the simplest case, for optimal alignment of the charging coils.
The kit, developed in cooperation with Infineon, has an I²C interface on the receiver board for sensors, and wireless modules can be connected to the transmitter board. “The Internet of Things doesn’t mean that every unit has to communicate using the internet protocol. By transferring data during charging, devices can be part of a cost-effective IoT solution without having to be constantly ‘online.’ We are very curious to see what ideas our customers come up with using the kit,” says Cem Som.
The wireless power kit for developers is a 200W charger, but it can also serve as a template for higher-power solutions. Würth Elektronik advises developers on selecting the right components and provides free samples.
