Its feature set has been reduced compared to AMD Ryzen V1000 processors, but it still offers a range of very attractive features, including dual multi-threaded cores, support for three 4K displays, and an AMD Radeon Vega GPU with three compute units. With a scalable TDP of 24 to 12 watts and CPU speeds up to 3.5 GHz, there's massive processing power for single threads. With even more impressive graphics performance, these modules are ideal for applications where OEMs want to emphasize the quality of their products with ultra-immersive graphics.
“With CPU performance 16% better (1) and GPU performance 33% better (2) than its direct competitor, the high-performance R1606G SoC offers decisive competitive advantages. The slightly lower-performing AMD Ryzen Embedded R1505G is even more outstanding: it achieves 51% better performance in CineBench R15 (1), and the GPU achieves 91% better performance in 3DMark11 (2) compared to the direct competition,” explains Andreas Bergbauer, Product Line Manager for COM Express at congatec.
Target markets for the new COM Express module based on the AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 series include graphics-intensive multi-display systems for gaming and digital signage, medical imaging, and industrial automation. Another application area is display-less systems, where the GPU is used for massively parallel data processing. Examples can be found in communications infrastructures, where modules are used for security applications or for uCPE, SD-WAN, routers, switches, and UTM (unified threat management). With a modular system design based on standardized COM modules, users benefit from lower development costs and faster time to market thanks to an application-ready compute core, flexible performance scalability even across processor sockets and generations, and high long-term availability.
The new high-performance conga-TR4 modules with COM Express Type 6 pinout are based on the latest AMD Ryzen Embedded R1505G and R1606G multi-core SoCs. They support up to 32GB of energy-efficient, fast, dual-channel DDR4 memory with speeds up to 2400 MT/s and optional ECC for maximum data security. The impressive AMD Radeon Vega graphics with three compute units support up to three independent displays with UHD resolution up to 4K and 10-bit HDR, as well as DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4 for 3D graphics. The integrated video engine enables hardware-accelerated transmission of HEVC (H.265) video in both directions. Thanks to support for HSA and OpenCL 2.0, deep learning (DL) workloads can be assigned to the GPU. In security-critical applications, the integrated AMD Secure Processor assists with hardware-accelerated RSA, SHA, and AES encryption and decryption.
The new conga-TR4 allows for a full USB-C implementation on the motherboard, including USB 3.1 Gen 2 with 10 Gbps, Power Delivery, and DisplayPort 1.4, for example, to connect external touchscreens with a single cable. Other performance-oriented interfaces include one PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, three PCIe Gen 3 slots, four PCIe Gen 2 slots, three USB 3.1 Gen 2 slots, one USB 3.1 Gen 1 slot, eight USB 2.0 slots, two SATA Gen 3 slots, and one Gigabit Ethernet port. Legacy CPU I/O for SD, SPI, LPC, I²C, and two UART ports, along with high-definition audio, completes the interface range. Supported operating systems include Linux, Yocto 2.0, and Microsoft Windows 10, with Windows 7 optionally also supported.
