: Optical bonding involves using an optical-grade adhesive to bond a glass film to a display surface. The primary goal of optical bonding is to improve display performance outdoors. Optical bonding increases readability and guarantees a defect rate of less than 0.2%, making it ideal for outdoor applications, especially in bright sunlight. Originally, this European customer used components sourced from Europe and Asia and assembled by third parties, but after several supply chain disruptions, they began searching for a more reliable product and supplier. Through a trusted Norwegian partner, they discovered Advantech.

figure5-wSystem Description:
For the military remote control device this customer required, an optically bonded safety glass was applied to the Advantech IDK-1107W 7-inch widescreen LCD monitor installed in the 7-inch remote control unit. At the start of the project, the customer still had some critical components in stock, such as the TFT panel and the glass, so two solutions were implemented in parallel. In the first phase, Advantech only offered optical bonding for the specified components. In the second phase, Advantech supplied a complete, one-stop solution. This allowed Advantech to provide both short- and long-term solutions for the entire project.
The adhesive used in the optical bonding prevents the formation of an air gap, significantly reducing reflections and improving screen readability.

figure6-wAdvantages:
The remote control unit is used outdoors, where sunlight can affect the readability of the information displayed on the screen. With the optical bonding, the air gap between the panel and the glass layer is eliminated, giving the IDK-1107W the following advantages:
• Improved readability thanks to reduced reflections and increased contrast and brightness
• Elimination of interference lines
• Improved mechanical strength
• Longer lifespan (resistance to scratches, vandalism, humidity, dust, and temperature fluctuations)
• Improved heat dissipation from direct contact
• Improved contrast ratio
