Currently, 4% of all power modules in use today are in automotive applications. This market is expected to grow by an impressive 20% annually in the coming years. The application possibilities are vast, and inverters for variable frequency drives in hybrid and electric systems can already be found in trucks, buses, and agricultural vehicles, as well as in automotive and racing cars.

Lighting engineers and designers have been observing for some time that the adoption of LEDs as the primary light source for general lighting applications is just around the corner. Consumers are also becoming aware of this transition following the commercial availability of the first LED lamps for home use.

Silver compound sintering technology has been used to bond chips to ceramic substrates since 1994. Since then, the properties of the sintered bond and its reliability benefits have been analyzed in numerous international studies. However, at that time, this technology was not ready for widespread application in the electronics industry.

At first glance, to the experienced power supply engineer, digital controllers might seem very complicated. After all, switched-mode power conversion is simply about regulating a voltage or current (or both) by generating an error signal and using this error signal to control the on and off times of one or more switches.

The SKiM® (Semikron Integrated Module) family of modules is the latest generation of ultra-compact modules without a copper sole and with a pressure-fit connection. In these modules, instead of soldering the ceramic substrate (DCB), necessary for chip isolation, to a copper sole, the connection is made by pressure.

In the industry, the trend is moving away from washing machines with a 5 kg drum capacity towards larger models with a 7 or 8 kg capacity. However, these large drums are still being installed in standard-sized washing machines with a width of 60 cm, which means there is much less space between the drum and the housing. This increases the likelihood of collisions.

This article will review how to design a state machine starting from a general problem description. As a starting point, we will use a classic example taken from a hardware design textbook. As we will see, there is usually more than one way to design a state machine to solve a specific problem.
