The collaboration between ABB E-mobility and Switch will focus on pioneering the simplification of electric vehicle charging, removing current artificial barriers, encouraging EV adoption, and creating new revenue streams.
The investment marks the beginning of a partnership to advance a seamless EV charging ecosystem that will revolutionize the charging experience for both operators and drivers. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Cumulative investment in electric vehicle charging hardware and infrastructure is estimated to exceed $100 billion by 2023. To fully enable and maximize this growth in 2023 and beyond, a more integrated approach to the operation and management of EV chargers is needed. This approach must address the current challenges facing the global charger network, which remains fragmented, with varying charging experiences from location to location and operator to operator.
An integrated digital solution, spanning the entire value chain from the EV vehicle and charger to the grid, offers the ideal solution. It will not only facilitate new business models but, more importantly, ensure an enhanced charging experience for the driver.
The Switch system provides a deep view of the entire charging process from start to finish: the protocol-based “conversation” between the EV and charger and between the charger and the backend, including grid integration for smart charging and V2G applications. This reduces customer failures and helps companies control, maintain, and optimize upload sessions to resolve customer-facing issues.
To facilitate interoperable solutions across the industry and avoid a lock-in effect, open communication protocols such as ISO 15118-2/-20 and OCPP 2.0.1 are essential. Companies can replace software solutions based on standardized protocols and service providers with minimal migration effort. By offering an integrated charger operating system (Josev) and a cloud-based charger management platform (Switch platform) built on these standards, Switch is removing barriers to adoption for businesses. Its vertically integrated solution can eliminate the fragmentation of the electric vehicle charging ecosystem and pave the way for next-generation EV charging, reducing charger and range anxiety among end consumers.
