This development partnership aims to leverage the companies' individual strengths, capabilities, and resources to enhance the platform's technology, increase development efficiency, and reduce time to market. Engineers will collaborate in Germany and other locations to facilitate this process. FCA will contribute engineering, technical resources, and expertise to the alliance, along with its significant sales volume, geographic reach, and extensive experience in North America.
In July 2016, BMW Group, Intel, and Mobileye announced a partnership to make autonomous vehicles a reality, collaborating on the development of highly automated driving (Level 3) and fully automated driving (Level 4/5) solutions for production by 2021. Since then, they have been working on the design and development of an architecture that can be used by various automakers worldwide while maintaining each company's individual brand identity.
This cooperation continues apace with the goal of deploying 40 autonomous test vehicles on public roads by the end of 2017. They also expect to benefit from the data and learnings gained from Mobileye's recently announced fleet of 100 Level 4 test vehicles, which demonstrates the economies of scale of this collaborative approach. Mobileye is an Intel company.
