The first-prize winner will receive worldwide recognition and $20,000 in cash for an innovative product that benefits society and the economy. Previous competitions have generated more than 10,000 design ideas from engineers, entrepreneurs, and students in over 100 countries. Submissions are accepted until July 1, 2015.
"Advanced technological innovation is at the heart of what we do at Mouser, and we are very excited to once again support design engineers by helping to sponsor this global design competition aimed at them," said Kevin Hess, Vice President of Technical Marketing at Mouser Electronics.
“Intel is committed to inspiring and enabling inventors, entrepreneurs, and design engineers to rapidly develop prototypes, innovations, and products. With products like Intel® Edison, we deliver smaller, more energy-efficient products with built-in wireless connectivity. This is helping the industry rethink where—and in what situations—connected computing is possible and desirable, from robotics and drones to small consumer Internet of Things devices like wearables. We are thrilled to join Mouser Electronics in sponsoring this groundbreaking design competition,” said CJ Bruno, Vice President and General Manager of Intel Americas.
The “Create the Future” design competition has successfully drawn attention to product designs that enhance quality of life, improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare, and help reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The competition was launched in 2002 by the editors of NASA Tech Briefs magazine to help stimulate and reward innovation in engineering.
The first-prize winner will be chosen from among the winners of seven categories: Aerospace and Defense, Automotive/Transportation, Consumer Products, Electronics, Machinery/Automation/Robotics, Medicine, and Sustainable Technologies. Entries can be submitted individually or as a team, and an independent jury will evaluate them. Website visitors are invited to vote for their favorite candidate.
Previous winners of the award include a keychain-sized device that makes smartphones “smarter” by allowing consumers to run various low-cost sensing applications; a fast and inexpensive device for checking foodborne illnesses; a wheelchair propulsion system designed to increase user mobility and reduce upper body injuries from repetitive strain; a mechanism that makes CPR simple and safe for anyone to perform; a fuel-saving motor/pump for cars and trucks; a low-cost emergency warning system installed in vehicles; and a new type of energy-efficient lighting.
