NFC has become a de facto standard in the digital economy and impacts many aspects of daily life. Financial technology, such as mobile point-of-sale (mPoS) terminals and contactless payments, IoT, asset tracking, and wireless charging are prime examples of NFC's growing presence. Headquartered in Graz, Austria, Panthronics offers advanced, easy-to-deploy, innovative, small-form-factor, and highly efficient NFC chipsets and software for payments, IoT, and NFC wireless charging. Renesas and Panthronics have been addressing the growing demand for NFC as partners since 2018. The acquisition of Panthronics' competitive NFC technology will provide Renesas with in-house capabilities to instantly capture the growing and emerging market opportunities for NFC.

Combining Panthronics' NFC technology with Renesas' broad portfolio of products and security features in microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs) will provide Renesas' extensive customer base with a multitude of options for creating innovative, market-ready NFC system solutions. To date, Renesas and Panthronics have already launched four joint NFC system solutions. These include solutions for mPoS terminals, wireless charging, and smart metering platforms in wall boxes. The companies have also developed a fully integrated NFC connectivity board within Renesas' Quick-Connect Studio ecosystem, enabling customers to quickly and easily add functionality to MCU development boards. This allows for a plug-and-play addition of high-end, fully featured NFC connectivity. Several more systems for PoS, IoT, wireless charging, and mobile applications are under development. Furthermore, the advantages of Panthronics' technology are also expected to be leveraged for Renesas' automotive solutions, such as digital key management.
