Recognizing that climate change is one of the most significant issues impacting our business activities, ROHM has set the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions (virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions) by 2050 in its “Environmental Approach 2050” promulgated in April 2021. Subsequently, in our medium-term management plan, “MOVING FORWARD to 2025,” we announced our medium-term environmental objectives for the period up to 2030 and have promoted initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as accelerating the introduction of renewable energy.
As the risks associated with climate change become increasingly apparent, we will further increase our greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2030 and boost the efforts needed to reduce our environmental impact and achieve our "Environmental Approach 2050".
Medium and long-term environmental objectives
To achieve near-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, we have revised our 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target, increasing it from the 30% previously set in 2018 to 50.5%. We have also submitted a letter of commitment to obtain Science Based Targets (SBT) certification (awarded to greenhouse gas emissions targets that meet the Paris Agreement), which we will apply to this target.
Support the TCFD recommendations
ROHM drives continuous improvement in environmental conservation by establishing and operating a group-wide environmental management system in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001. At the same time, we have made a concerted effort to proactively disclose information, publishing annual targets and initiatives based on our environmental policy and approach on our website, along with various environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data. Going even further, we will conduct a scenario analysis in accordance with the TCFD recommendations we have endorsed, while also focusing on more transparent disclosure.
ROHM will continue to promote sustainability management in line with our corporate objectives and management approach, along with technological innovation in the field of power and analog semiconductors, which are key devices for improving efficiency, while actively engaging in a range of environmental conservation activities and environmental investments — including not only climate change, but also resource recycling and coexistence with nature — in accordance with our new environmental approach to achieving a sustainable society.
Terminology
The TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Reporting)
is an organization established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) to disseminate climate-related information and examine how financial institutions should respond. It encourages companies to understand the situation and disclose their governance, strategy, risk management, and indicators and targets related to climate-related risks and opportunities.
Paris Agreement
An international agreement adopted at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2015 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions after 2020. It states that the average increase in global temperature should be limited to well below 2°C (preferably 1.5°C) compared to pre-industrial levels.
OBC (Science-Based Targets)
An international initiative that calls for the establishment and implementation of science-based targets consistent with greenhouse gas reduction scenarios to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
