In 2021, the Badamsha wind farm will generate 396 GWh of energy for local industry and save 344,000 tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to the emissions of 74,000 cars. It is improving environmental sustainability and is an important step toward Kazakhstan's goal of meeting 50 percent of its energy demand with renewables by 2050.
The project is Saft's first contract with APS Energia, which specified the batteries for their proven reliability in harsh winter conditions. Alexey Kredin, CEO of APS Energia Kazakhstan, said: "Saft's long track record in supplying industrial nickel-cadmium battery solutions for cold climates gave us confidence that our backup power system will provide reliable performance to ensure continuous generation at the wind farm."

Safe, maintenance-free backup power is essential to ensure the continuous generation of wind turbines, particularly for remote sites in extreme climates where maintenance technicians have limited access.
Winter temperatures in Badamsha can drop to -35°C. This falls within the operating range of Saft's Uptimax nickel-cadmium batteries, which tolerate a wide temperature range of -40°C to +70°C and offer a long service life of over 20 years.

Saft supplied the batteries, manufactured in Oskarshamn, Sweden, through its Moscow base, from where it provides technical assistance and advice in Russian to customers throughout the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.
