Rail technology manufacturer Autometers Alliance Ltd has turned to Saft for more than 30 sets of ReGenPro batteries to provide emergency power for operations and safety systems in most of its railway tunnels.
Saft's ReGenPro batteries provide the necessary autonomy for essential tunnel communication and safety systems, such as lighting, fire detection, emergency lighting, data transmission systems, and electrical switchgear. This, in turn, will ensure the continuity of services and the safety of train passengers and crew.
Nickel technology was selected over other chemistries due to its proven high reliability, low maintenance requirements, long service life, and because Saft's nickel technology is not susceptible to sudden failure. Furthermore, the low-temperature capability reduces costs and emissions while simplifying installation by lowering substation heating requirements.
In addition to the batteries, Saft also developed specially reinforced battery racks capable of withstanding intense ground acceleration forces in the Seismic Zone 5 conditions found in the Kashmir-Jammu region.
Shirish Kulkarni, Managing Director of Sales and Marketing at Saft India, stated, “The success of Saft’s backup batteries in the Kashmir-Jammu railway tunnels has demonstrated that our technology delivers reliability, long service life, and sustainability under the most demanding conditions. As a result, Indian Railways can minimize maintenance and control operating costs in extremely remote locations.”
The new 48-kilometer line from Banihal to Sangaldan features 16 bridges and 11 tunnels, covering more than 43 kilometers. Among them is the T50, India’s longest haulage tunnel, at 12.77 kilometers. When the section becomes fully operational in late 2024, it will reduce travel times by hours and provide reliable service to passengers and freight year-round to boost the region's economy, which is based on tourism and agriculture.
