Saft's SBLE batteries will provide backup power to ensure the continuity and uninterrupted operation of critical safety and control systems in the expansion project of the 225 MW Khulna Combined Cycle Power Plant, 159 km from the capital, Dhaka.

Bangladesh, with a population of 152 million, is experiencing a boom in economic growth. Rapid urbanization and increased industrialization and development have contributed to the country's growing demand for electricity. Currently, 68 percent of the population has access to electricity, and per capita generation is 348 kWh (including renewable energy), which is very low compared to other developing countries. The country's total installed generation capacity is currently 10,600 MW. However, as part of its "electricity for all" goal, the government has prepared its Energy Master System Plan 2010 (PSMP). This plan projects that by 2030, Bangladesh's energy demand will be around 34,000 MW, while generation capacity will be approximately 39,000 MW.

Each of the large batteries for the Khulna project will comprise 175 Saft SB700 cells, with a nominal capacity of 700 Ah, to provide autonomous power in the event of a power outage at the main plant. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2015.

“The Khulna project for Shanghai Electric Group is an important step in Saft’s continued growth within China’s industrial backup power sector, as well as in maintaining our already strong position in the international power plant market,” says Xavier Delacroix, Managing Director of Saft’s Industrial Battery Group Division. “This success is thanks to our broad range of batteries that meet all backup power needs, from high power to high energy.”.

SBLE Batteries for Optimizing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
Saft's SBLE nickel-based battery pack has been specifically developed for backup and energy storage applications requiring long discharge times (typically 3 to 100 hours). Designed to operate across a wide temperature range, these batteries withstand electrical abuse, shock, and vibration, requiring only basic maintenance and offering an optimized Total Cost of Ownership over a 20-year or longer lifecycle.
