During its initial phase, the chair will focus on sustainable mobility, emphasizing the need to foster a technologically neutral scientific debate. Within this area, two lines of action stand out: improving air quality and reducing the carbon footprint of transportation.
In the area of improving air quality, the chair will make relevant scientific and technical information available to society on the polluting emissions generated by mobility and their impact on air quality. It will analyze the role of the latest emission control technologies in light and heavy vehicles, as well as new fuels and forecasts for sustainable urban mobility.
Furthermore, to promote a better understanding of the future concept of carbon neutrality, the role of greenhouse gas emissions produced by mobility will be analyzed, and calculations of the global carbon footprint, generated from the manufacture of a vehicle to the end of its useful life, will be carried out. Comparative analyses of the situation in Spain and Europe will also be conducted, along with future trends and solutions for reducing emissions.
The chair will promote forums for discussion and debate, such as: an Observatory on Sustainable Mobility; and a challenge aimed at students of the ETSII (School of Industrial Engineering), focused on proposing sustainable vehicle alternatives that reduce polluting emissions. and a workshop on greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles and future challenges, bringing together specialists and researchers from the sector.
The chair, led by Óscar García, director of ETSII-UPM, will feature expert professors and researchers such as Jesús Casanova, professor of Thermal Engines and researcher at the University Institute for Automotive Research (INSIA), and Rafael Borge, tenured professor in the Department of Industrial and Environmental Chemical Engineering.
