This change means LED chips are now available for a wide range of applications, as red and yellow LEDs are used in virtually every sector: in the automotive industry for turn signals, brake lights, and interior vehicle lighting; and in general lighting, they are used in displays, projection, signage, and color mixing systems. Osram Opto Semiconductors is one of the pioneers in this industry. The Regensburg-based company was the first manufacturer to produce all LED colors on 4-inch wafers years ago; now, it continues this trend with the new 6-inch wafers.
“Demand for red, orange, and yellow light-emitting diodes continues to grow. We are keeping pace with this demand by becoming the world’s first manufacturer to produce 6-inch wafers, which expands our capacity,” said Aldo Kamper, CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors. “The change will affect all product families and began earlier this year,” he added. The red, yellow, and orange chips will be manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Regensburg, Germany. InGaN chips for blue, green, and white LEDs will also be produced there, as well as in Penang, Malaysia.
