Most electrical equipment for consumers plugs directly into alternating current (AC) outlets, but what is less well known are the internal components of the equipment that transform alternating current into direct current (DC) through an "AC/DC power supply." The power consumption and efficiency of the power supply directly impact the energy consumption of the entire system and, therefore, national and global energy consumption.

MEAN WELL and OLFER Electronics are dedicated to innovating and developing high-efficiency products and researching environmentally friendly solutions that reduce energy consumption. The energy solutions offered by OLFER Electronics and MEAN WELL are compatible with green energy and future energy storage systems. Furthermore, the development of electric vehicles will also drive applications with high-voltage DC output.
In fact, high voltage can be used in various industrial applications: laser cutting, UV curing equipment, electrolysis equipment, and centralized power supply applications.
Figure 1 shows an application image of a high-voltage centralized power system. The power supply for the indoor equipment is supplied directly by direct current (DC); the power supplies for the indoor equipment are converted to a more efficient DC/DC power supply. The main power supply for the equipment is a high-wattage, high-efficiency AC/DC power supply. In this way, the number of power supply components in a single device can be significantly reduced, and excessive pollution and component costs can be lowered. Furthermore, the DC power supply system can be equipped with solar, wind, and other renewable energy installations. It reduces conversion losses when using AC power and reduces pollution from power plants.

Figure 2 shows the MEAN WELL high-voltage DC centralized power supply: DALI-2 digital lighting control solution. The system operates as described in the introduction. For a centralized power supply, the front end uses a 380V DC high-voltage output power supply; the rear end uses a DC/DC LED driver; and the lights employ a high-voltage series connection to minimize power conversion loss and lighting costs.
