Agricultural groups, ranging from local producers to government agencies, have begun adopting energy-efficient lighting, water-saving cultivation methods, and other green technologies. These process changes have enabled highly localized fruit and vegetable production within urban areas. For example, in Tokyo, many mid- and high-rise buildings dedicate entire floors to small-scale crops for use in restaurants and cafes within the same building. Lumileds' LUXEON SunPlus series LEDs, available from Mouser Electronics, support indoor and greenhouse agriculture by providing precise light wavelengths and optimized spectra that complement or replace natural sunlight to enhance crop yields.
The LUXEON SunPlus 20 line meets the needs of greenhouse growers who want to add supplemental high-altitude lighting to enable 24-hour or year-round growth. Designers can develop single-channel solutions using the blue (420-480nm) and red (620-670nm) wavelengths key to photosynthesis. Alternatively, designers can create multi-channel solutions using selected LEDs to optimize light output at different stages of the plant life cycle: seedling, germination, and flowering. The LUXEON SunPlus 20 line consists of high-power 2.0 × 2.0 mm LEDs in deep blue (440-460 nm), dark red (655-675 nm), far red (720-750 nm), warm white (broad spectrum), and cool white.
The LUXEON SunPlus 35 line meets the needs of vertical farming, which requires short-distance lighting with high uniformity. The LUXEON SunPlus 35 line offers blue (440-460 nm), lime, white, and three shades of medium-power purple LEDs in a 3.5 × 3.5 mm format. The purple LEDs are offered with varying blue PPF relative to the total PPF across the photoactive region (400-700 nm). The purple LED (2.5 percent blue) stimulates stem growth and flowering, while the purple LED (12.5 percent blue) stimulates general growth, and the purple LED (25 percent blue) stimulates vegetative growth of larger leaves.
