Part of Atmel's new Tiny AVR portfolio, these small 8-bit microcontrollers are optimized for applications that require performance, energy efficiency, and ease of use in a small package.

The Atmel ATtiny102 and ATtiny104 microcontrollers, available from Mouser Electronics, are low-power 8-bit CMOS microcontrollers based on Atmel's enhanced AVR RISC architecture. The AVR core combines a comprehensive instruction set with 16 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), which speeds up instruction execution to a single clock cycle. By executing powerful instructions in a single clock cycle, the devices achieve outputs of approximately 1 MIPS per MHz (up to 12 MIPS), allowing system designers to optimize power consumption relative to processing speed.

The ATtiny102/104 devices replace previously used discrete components to perform simple intelligent functions such as frequency control, motor control, and on/off switching. At the same time, these devices offer more capabilities than discrete components and integrate powerful features into a small, low-pin package with only 1kB of flash memory. The devices include self-programming for firmware updates, non-volatile data storage, an internal precision oscillator for more reliable motor control, and high-speed serial communication with a USART. Operating from 1.8V to 5.5V, the devices include a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with internal voltage references and offer quiescent currents of less than 100nA in sleep mode with SRAM hold.

The ATtiny104 microcontroller is supported by the Atmel ATtiny104 Xplained Nano evaluation kit, also available from Mouser Electronics. The ATtiny104 Xplained Nano utilizes the Atmel development ecosystem, including Atmel Studio 7, an integrated development environment (IDE) that provides designers with a transparent and user-friendly environment for coding, building, simulating, programming, and debugging applications for Atmel microcontrollers.

The ATtiny102/104 devices integrate features previously only available in larger microcontrollers, making them ideal for small applications including logic replacement and the latest cost-optimized applications in industrial applications, home automation, LED lighting, fan control, and personal health applications.
