The NSA is now urging the data center and computing markets to prepare for the post-quantum era within the next two years. Microchip Technology has developed its MEC175xB embedded controllers with embedded, immutable post-quantum cryptographic support to help system architects meet evolving security requirements.

As standalone controllers, the MEC175xB family employs a modular approach to enable developers to efficiently adopt post-quantum cryptography, helping to ensure long-term data protection without compromising existing functionality. The design of these low-power controllers includes NIST-approved (National Institute of Standards and Technology) post-quantum cryptographic algorithms, configurable secure boot solutions, and an advanced eSPI (Enhanced Serial Peripheral Interface).

“As knowledge about potential future attacks on cryptography using quantum computing becomes more widespread, the cybersecurity landscape is undergoing substantial transformations,” said Nuri Dagdeviren, corporate vice president of Microchip’s security products business unit. “Our MEC175xB controllers, featuring quantum-resistance cryptography implemented on immutable hardware with efficient power management, are designed to provide our customers with the tools they need to meet the demands of increasingly complex digital security.”.

The MEC175xB controllers incorporate CNSA 2.0 compliant ML-DSA (Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithms), LMS (Leighton-Micali Signature) verification based on Merkle-state hash functions, and a NIST-standardized ML-KEM (Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism). These new algorithms, resistant to quantum attacks, are implemented in immutable hardware to block potential attack vectors in software solutions.

The controllers incorporate secure boot and secure firmware update techniques to utilize CNSA 1.0, 2.0, or hybrid signature verification. The authentication functions use ML-DSA for signatures and key generation to enhance system integrity and authenticity.

These controllers are based on an Arm® Cortex®-M4F processor with a 96 MHz Memory Protection Unit (MPU) to deliver high performance in complex calculations and real-time applications. The controllers include 480 KB of SRAM, I3C® host and client interfaces, and an optional USB 2.0 Full-Speed interface for versatile connectivity.
