To protect embedded data, the PIC24F “GB4” family integrates several Microchip Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) that operate independently of the CPU. The comprehensive hardware cryptographic engine, which includes support for the AES, DES, and 3DES standards, reduces software overhead, lowers power consumption, and enables faster processing. A random number generator is used to generate random keys for data encryption, decryption, and authentication, thus providing a higher level of security. For added protection, this family offers the flexibility to choose between two cryptographic key storage options: one-time programmable (OTP) to prevent overwriting keys, or Key RAM, which erases keys upon power failure. To allow the application's real-time clock to continue functioning when primary power is removed, a VBAT pin is used as a backup power supply.
By reducing the number of system components, the controller of a segmented LCD display provides the ability to directly control up to 512 segments, thus enabling more informative and flexible displays that include descriptive icons and scroll bars.
The PIC24F “GB4” family is supported by Microchip’s first-level standard development tool suite, including the PIC24FJ256GB410 plug-in module (MA240038) for the Explorer 16 development board (DM240001), priced at $25.00 and $129.99 respectively.
Versions of the product are available with USB (PIC24FJXXXGB4XX) and without USB (PIC24FJXXXGA4XX). These new PIC24F microcontrollers are immediately available for sampling and volume production, with standard lead times.
