The XMC4000 family supports three major trends in industrial applications: it helps improve energy efficiency, supports a wide range of communication standards, and reduces software complexity during development. End-user applications for the XMC4000 family include electric motors, solar power converters, manufacturing automation, and building automation.

XMC stands for “Cross-Market Microcontroller.” Because of its configuration, the XMC4000 family is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Infineon is using this product to bridge the performance gap between the 16-bit XE166 family and the 32-bit TriCore™ family. The XMC4000 family is designed to enable scalable and compatible solutions with a high degree of software reuse. The family consists of five XMC4000 series: XMC4100, XMC4200, XMC4400, XMC4500, and XMC4700. These series differ primarily in core clock speed, memory capacity, peripheral functions, and the number of I/O points.

The XMC4000 family features a powerful CPU subsystem, DSP capabilities, a floating-point unit, fast Flash memory with a read time of only 22 ns and error correction code (ECC), a large SRAM, and expanded peripheral capabilities. The extensive range of peripherals includes new time counter modules, up to four parallel 12-bit A/D converters with a sampling rate of 70 ns and a conversion time of 500 ns, up to two 12-bit D/A converters, up to four high-resolution PWM channels (150 CV), integrated delta-sigma demodulator modules, and push-button modules. Extensive communication is provided by an IEEE 1588-compliant Ethernet MAC (Media Access Control for Ethernet with timestamp), USB 2.0, CAN and SD/MMC interfaces, and up to six serial communication channels that can be individually configured as UART, SPI, Quad SPI, IIC, IIS, and LIN using software. In addition, the XMC4000 family offers a high-speed external bus interface that supports synchronous standards such as SDRAM or Burst Flash, and asynchronous standards such as SRAM, NAND Flash and NOR flash.

The DAVE™ 3 integrated development environment enables practical, fast, and application-oriented software development. The Eclipse-based environment, complete with compiler, GNU free debugger, and data visualization utilities, can be extended using third-party tools.
The first device in Infineon's 32-bit XMC4000 family is the XMC4500 series. These microcontrollers offer a 120-MHz CPU, up to 1 MB of onboard flash memory, 160 KB of RAM, and a wide range of peripheral and interface features. Peripherals include four fast 12-bit parallel A/D converters, two 12-bit A/D converters, four sigma-delta demodulator modules, six capture/compare units (CCU4 and CCU8), two positioning interface modules, and an eight-button module. Communication features include interfaces for Ethernet, USB, and SD/MMC. In addition, the XMC4000 family offers three CAN modules, six serial communication channels, and an external bus interface for communication. Package options include LQFP-144, LQFP-100, and LFBGA-144.
